JSW Steel Italy Resumes Piombino Rail Mill Operations After Shutdown
Production has officially resumed at the rail rolling mill operated by JSW Steel's Italian subsidiary in Piombino after being shut down since July 16, 2026, due to consecutive motor failures. The facility, which is a critical supplier for Italy's national railway operator Ferrovie dello Stato, was restarted after temporary weekend repairs were completed by staff. However, local trade unions have criticized the hasty repairs, demanding a comprehensive scheduled maintenance program and new investments to prevent further safety risks and defective output.

Anglo American Reports 17% Drop in First-Half Coking Coal Production
Anglo American reported that its attributable production of saleable coking coal fell to 3.58 million tonnes in the first half of 2026, marking a 17% decline compared to the same period last year. Consequently, the company's total coking coal sales volume also dropped by 12% year-on-year to 3.39 million tonnes. The production constraints reflect ongoing operational challenges and lower extraction volumes at the multinational mining company's majority-owned coal assets.

Vietnam Stimulates Domestic Rail Steel Capacity for Infrastructure Expansion
To support the requirement of nearly 4 million tons of steel rail for high-speed transit networks between 2026 and 2030, Vietnam's domestic steelmakers are rapidly expanding rail production capacity. Major producer Hoa Phat is investing VND 14,000 billion in a new rail mill at its Dung Quat complex with a designed annual capacity of 700,000 tons. Production is scheduled to commence at 400,000 tons in 2027, eventually scaling up to full capacity by 2028 to reduce the nation's reliance on imported steel rails for its 28.7 million meters of planned tracks.

Japan Imposes Anti-Dumping Duties on South Korean and Chinese Galvanized Steel
On July 24, 2026, Japan's Ministry of Finance officially announced a preliminary decision to impose anti-dumping duties on galvanized steel products imported from South Korea and China. The regulatory action follows an investigation revealing that imported galvanized steel strips and plates were being sold below market value, causing substantial harm to the domestic steel industry. These protective tariffs aim to ensure fair market competition and are expected to significantly alter regional supply chains.

SSAB First-Half Steel Production Grows 3.3% to 4.05 Million Tonnes
Swedish steelmaker SSAB released its first-half 2026 operational results, reporting a 3.3% year-on-year increase in total steel production to 4.05 million tonnes. The company's rolled steel output reached 3.75 million tonnes, while total shipments grew to 3.5 million tonnes for the period. The SSAB Europe segment was a primary growth driver, achieving a nearly sixfold earnings surge in the second quarter to SEK 624 million due to higher average selling prices and reduced raw material costs.

【Australia's HVO approved a 19-year mine life extension, with a decision expected in early September.】
Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) has applied to extend its mine life by 19 years, proposing an additional 430 million tonnes of coal production while extending operations at its North and South mines to 2045 and 2042, respectively. The project, jointly operated by Glencore and Yancoal, is currently under review by the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission, with a final decision expected in early September. Supporters argue the extension would help sustain regional employment and the local economy, while opponents say it conflicts with the state's emissions reduction targets and would increase greenhouse gas emissions. If approved, the extension would support long-term operational continuity at HVO and help maintain expectations for Australian coal supply. If rejected, the market may reassess the long-term supply outlook for the Hunter Valley. The approval outcome is expected to remain a key market focus.

【Fatal accident at Australia's Peak Downs coking coal mine prompts 24-hour suspension.】
A fatal collision between a mining truck and a light vehicle occurred at BMA's Peak Downs metallurgical coal mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin, leaving one worker dead and another seriously injured. Following the incident, operations at Peak Downs were suspended, while BMA also paused four other Bowen Basin mines for 24 hours to support the investigation and conduct safety reviews. As Peak Downs is a major open-cut metallurgical coal mine, the incident has drawn market attention to the short-term stability of Australian coking coal supply.

[Fenix Resources secures approvals for Beebyn-W10 iron ore mine in Western Australia]
Australian iron ore miner Fenix Resources secured the key regulatory and environmental approvals needed to develop the first stage of its Beebyn-W10 deposit within the Weld Range iron ore project in Western Australia. The company received sign-off on its Mining Development and Closure Proposal and a Native Vegetation Clearing Permit from the state's Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, alongside a Prescribed Premises Works Licence from the Department of Water and Environmental Protection. The approvals support processing capacity of up to 6 million tonnes per annum at the newly established Beebyn Hub. Mining at Beebyn-W10 is expected to begin this quarter, with first shipment targeted for the December quarter of 2026. The deposit sits adjacent to Fenix's operating Beebyn-W11 mine, whose annual capacity is being expanded from 1.5 million to 3 million tonnes. Combined, the Beebyn Hub is targeted to reach as much as 6 million tonnes per year by the financial year ending June 2028. The approval adds a new mid-tier supply source to a seaborne market where the three largest exporters already ship roughly 970 million tonnes a year between them.

【China’s Coking Coal Market Remains Divided as Weak Demand Offsets Supply Constraints】
On July 23, 2026, China’s coking coal market remained divided as thin trading and cautious buying limited price momentum, while ongoing safety inspections and delayed mine restarts in Shanxi kept some coking coal grades in relatively tight supply. The imbalance between weak demand and constrained supply contributed to mixed coking coal prices, while coke prices continued to decline.

【China’s Sluggish Steel Sector Continues to Pressure Coking Coal Demand 】
On July 20, 2026, China’s steel sector was described as still “keeping its head above water,” with first-half crude steel output declining 3% year on year to 499.95 million tonnes. Persistent weakness in the property sector, including an 18% drop in real estate investment and a 23.4% decline in construction starts, points to subdued steel production, which could continue to weigh on coking coal demand and limit upside for coking coal and coke prices.

【India’s Jindal Steel Q1 Profit Falls 43.5% as Higher Coking Coal Costs Weigh on Margins 】
On July 24, 2026, India’s Jindal Steel reported a 43.5% year-on-year decline in first-quarter net profit to USD 87.51 million, as elevated coking coal costs outweighed a recovery in domestic steel prices. Although revenue increased 26% and steel sales rose 17.4%, higher coking coal costs pushed material expenses up 43.7%, squeezing the company’s margins.
