Chinese lead-acid battery producers are now turning willing to purchase secondary lead as raw material due to cost concerns, Shanghai Metals Market learns.

SHANGHAI, Aug. 12 (SMM) – Chinese lead-acid battery producers are now turning willing to purchase secondary lead as raw material due to cost concerns, Shanghai Metals Market learns.

SMM data shows the price between refined and secondary lead is generally between 200-300 yuan per tonne, but the gap has expanded to 600 yuan per tonne since Jul. 25 as China’s spot lead rose with SHFE lead.

The price for 12AH and 20AH battery was heard as low as at 290 and 480 per set, respectively, and a 600-yuan increase in refined price meant that production costs for 20AH will grow by 12 yuan per set.

The expanded price gap between the two, and squeezed profits caused domestic lead-acid battery producers to buy secondary lead to meet production needs, SMM understands.
