On the 16th, the environmental protection service platform of Shanghai enterprises and institutions announced the silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor material project of Shanghai Tianyue Semiconductor Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Shanghai Tianyue"). According to the announcement, the construction site of the project is located in Lingang, Pudong New area, with a total investment of 2.5 billion yuan, mainly engaged in the production of 6-inch silicon carbide wafers. Construction will begin in late July 2021, with an expected production date of 2022 and a production date of June 2026.
According to Tianyue, Shanghai Tianyue is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shandong Tianyue Advanced Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Tianyue Advanced"), whose main business is silicon carbide substrate. Science and Technology Innovation Board's IPO application was accepted by the Shanghai Stock Exchange on May 31, 2021 and is currently in an "inquired" status.

New energy vehicles will be the main driving force for the growth of silicon carbide. Tesla was the first to use 24 silicon carbide MOSFET modules on the Model 3, which can increase the battery life of the silicon-based IGBT by 5-10%. After that, domestic new energy car manufacturers BYD and Weilai have also announced that they will adopt silicon carbide scheme to reduce the loss of power system.
According to Yole, by 2025, the silicon carbide market in new energy vehicles and charging piles will reach 1.778 billion US dollars, accounting for about 70% of the total silicon carbide market.
Who are the important players in the silicon carbide industry chain?
At present, the third generation semiconductor is in the early stage of development, many excellent companies are not listed yet, and most of the relevant listed companies are in the stage of research and development, or the products are in the early stage of promotion, which makes little contribution to the income of listed companies.
Yin Yanji, an analyst at Huaan Securities, said that some new companies will enter the silicon carbide industry chain, but the original IGBT leader and other traditional power device companies will also be important players of silicon carbide power devices and fully benefit from this wave of more than a decade of industry trends.
The IGBT leaders in the field of silicon carbide in China include Starr semiconductors and unlisted BYD semiconductors and CER semiconductors.
Companies upgrading traditional power devices to silicon carbide devices include Wentai Technology, China Resources Micro, Jetty Micro, Yangjie Technology, Xinjie Neng, Shilan Micro, etc. Haiwei Huaxin, a high-tech subsidiary of Haight, has the first domestic commercial production line of 6-inch compound semiconductors. in the field of high-power semiconductors, silicon carbide and other new business directions have established cooperative relations with important customers and shipped in small quantities. San'an Optoelectronics has invested in the construction of the third generation semiconductor project of silicon carbide and other compounds in Changsha.
Closed testing and equipment link, Tonfu Micro Power has the ability to closed test the third generation of silicon carbide semiconductors, and has carried out related business; Lou Xiao Technology layout of silicon carbide equipment and materials; Jingsheng Electro-Mechanical has begun to realize the crystal growth of silicon carbide materials and the sales of some equipment for epitaxy in 2020.
Among the unlisted companies worth paying attention to, Tiankeheda and Shandong Tianyue in the field of silicon carbide wafers both lay out the most difficult substrates in the production link; Skyfield Semiconductor is engaged in the research and development, production and sales of silicon carbide epitaxial wafers. It is the first enterprise in China's silicon carbide semiconductor material supply chain to obtain automobile quality certification; Tyco Tianyue is a more pure silicon carbide device manufacturer.
