SMM: recently, the first phase of Pulang Copper Mine of Yunnan Diqing Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., designed by China Nonferrous Engineering Co., Ltd. And China Enfei Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., has been completed and accepted by China Copper Co., Ltd. And Yunnan Copper (Group) Co., Ltd.

Pulang Copper Mine is a very large porphyry copper deposit, with a total of 4.3 million tons of copper metal found. The orebody is thick and nearly vertical, and the ore reserves are large, so it is suitable for large-scale mining. The production capacity of the first stage mining and separation project of Pulang Copper Mine is 12.5 million tons / year. The first phase of the project adopts full underground mining and natural caving mining, and the project design includes mining, mineral processing, tailings and public auxiliary facilities, with a design service life of 25 years.

In 2005, with the best technical solution and advanced environmental protection design concept, China Enfei won the bid for the design project. In the design work, China Enfei has always adhered to the design concept of building Pulang Copper Mine into a "large-scale, modern and environment-friendly" domestic largest non-ferrous metal underground mine and the largest natural caving mine. adhere to the use of international and domestic mining advanced technology, technology and equipment.

At present, Pulang Copper Mine has been built into the largest natural caving mine in China, and it is also the first over 10 million ton underground non-ferrous metal mine built in China. It has modern equipment such as automatic ore drawing, unmanned, long-distance belt transportation, underground cycle crushing and so on, including many advanced technologies and equipment in the world, such as mining, mineral processing, tailings and so on. After the completion of the project, the mine has truly realized safe, efficient and low-cost production, and has become a super-large copper mine with the most advanced mining technology and the highest level of equipment in China.

BHP’s Copper-Led Growth Strategy Brings Zambia Back Into Focus
BHP’s growing reliance on copper as an earnings driver is bringing Zambia back into focus as the mining giant looks to expand its exposure to the metal and identify new long-term growth opportunities. Copper generated about $18.2 billion in operating earnings for BHP, overtaking iron ore as the company’s largest earnings contributor. The shift highlights how copper is becoming increasingly central to BHP’s portfolio as stronger prices and expectations of sustained demand improve the economics of developing new supply. Against that backdrop, Zambia is re-emerging on BHP’s strategic map. The company has renewed interest in large-scale copper exploration in the country, with a focus on identifying substantial deposits that could support long-life mining operations. The move marks a notable change in BHP’s approach to Africa after years of limited direct exposure to the region. The Zambia interest is particularly relevant because BHP’s copper strategy is increasingly focused on securing a deeper pipeline of future resources rather than relying solely on its existing operations. Zambia’s underexplored geology and established Copperbelt infrastructure make it a natural target as competition intensifies for large, high-quality copper deposits. From a copper-market perspective, BHP’s renewed attention to Zambia is another indication that major global miners are increasingly looking to Africa for the next generation of copper supply. The significance is less about immediate production and more about exploration capital: when a company of BHP’s scale begins allocating attention and technical resources to a jurisdiction, it can accelerate broader investor interest and increase competition for prospective ground. The combination of copper becoming BHP’s largest earnings contributor and Zambia returning to its exploration radar therefore reinforces the country’s growing strategic importance within the global copper supply pipeline.

Brass Billet Imports Expected To Remain In The Doldrums
[SMM Brass Billet Flash] SMM believes that July brass billet imports pulled back sharply MoM, mainly due to China's downstream entering the traditional consumption off-season. End-use demand for brass billet in China was in the doldrums, processing enterprises mainly consumed their own inventory, purchase willingness outside China weakened, and import orders contracted. However, cumulative imports from January to July still achieved positive YoY growth, and supply from outside China continued to supplement the domestic market. Going forward, China's end-use demand for brass billet has not shown clear signs of recovery. If no concentrated restocking occurs, brass billet imports are expected to remain in the doldrums.

[SMM Brass Billet Flash] In terms of import value, July brass billet import value was $22.9232 million, down 23.65% MoM and up 23.04% YoY; cumulative import value for January-July 2026 was $158.656 million, up 31.74% YoY. Monthly imports pulled back significantly MoM, but import value maintained positive YoY growth, reflecting that import value stayed high.
