BERLIN (Scrap Monster): The latest trade statistics released by the German administration indicates that the country’s imports and exports of steel scrap declined in 2015 when matched with the previous year. The scrap steel purchases by German steel making industry and foundries declined during the year.
As per trade data, the exports of scrap steel by Germany during the year totaled around 8 million tonnes in 2015. This is significantly lower by 16% when compared with 2014. The scrap steel exports had totaled nearly 9.5 million tonnes during 2014. Also, Germany’s steel scrap imports reported decline of 14% year-on-year. The imports during the entire year 2015 totaled 4.56 million tonnes, 14% lower when matched with the imports of 5.30 million tonnes during the year 2014.
Year-on-year, Germany’s domestic steel production has dropped marginally by 0.6%. The country’s domestic steel production totaled 42.6 million tonnes during 2015. The steel scrap purchases by German steel mills totaled 14.3 million tonnes, down 3.4% when matched with 2014. Meantime, purchases by foundries recorded slightest decline of 0.5% over the previous year. The steel production by foundries totaled 4.04 million tonnes .The steel scrap purchases exceeded 3.38 million tonnes.
Meantime, domestic scrap generation went lower by almost 6% in 2015 to 21 million tonnes. The scrap usage during the entire year totaled nearly 18.5 million tonnes in 2015, almost 3%lower when compared with 2014 level. The scrap usage by foundries too reported marginal fall of 0.4% to touch 5.46 million tonnes.
