PHILADELPHIA (Scrap Monster): The York County Solid Waste Authority has launched a new electronics waste recycling program which will be in effect from April onwards. The news release issued by the Authority states that the County has signed a new contract with ECOVanta- the previous e-waste recycling vendor. The new contract will be valid through 2016 and the start date will be announced soon.

The County had cancelled its previous program almost three months back. The York County Solid Waste and Refuse Authority had blamed rising costs and complications linked with 2010 Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) law, Act 108 for cancellation of the program.

Following the cancellation of the earlier contract, e-waste had started piling up. The authorities had prohibited disposal of electronics devices at Pennsylvania waste facilities. Instead, residents were asked to keep possession of all unwanted electronics until a new program is in place. With the new contract being signed, residents can dispose of their used electronics.

Starting April onwards, e-scrap will be collected from 3 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the authority's yard waste site off Flour Mill Road. Satellite collection sites will also be set up in Penn and Fairview townships, O'Connor said.

Televisions, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors and computer-related items such as a keyboard or printer can all be disposed of in the new program. In addition, electronic items such as cell phones, vacuum cleaners, alarm clocks, irons and coffee makers will be accepted. However, devices that include freon, such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, will not be accepted.
