FORT MYERS (Scrap Monster): The Florida Chapter of the National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) has recognized three state legislators as “Legislators of the Year” for their continued support to waste and recycling industry. The awards were announced in connection with Florida Recycles Day. The three senators to receive the honors are Wilton Simpson (R-Trilby), Lake Ray (R-Jacksonville) and Halsey Beshears (R-Monticello).

Simpson and Ray are honored for their commitment to the Natural Gas Vehicle Fleet Rebate Program. The Natural Gas Fuel Fleet Vehicle Rebate provides eligible applicants a rebate for the cost of conversion or the incremental cost incurred by an applicant in connection with the conversion, purchase, or lease for a minimum term of five years, of a natural gas fleet vehicle placed into service on or after July 1, 2013. The maximum rebate under this program is $25,000 per purchased/leased or converted vehicle, not to exceed 50 percent of eligible costs.

Beshears is honored for filing legislation on public records litigation. The legislation protects private companies from unnecessary and invasive revealing of company information by third party companies and entities.

According to NWRA, the waste and recycling industry in Florida virtually touches all businesses and residents. It is a major contributor to state’s economy. The private waste and recycling industry directly and indirectly employs around 69,000 people and generates annual revenue of $10.1 billion. At the same time, the industry makes significant contribution to environmental protection by offering waste removal and recycling services.

The National Waste & Recycling Association is the trade association representing private-sector U.S. waste and recycling companies, as well as the manufacturers and service providers that do business with those companies.
