MONTGOMERY (Scrap Monster): The Alabama Environmental Council (AEC) has announced opening of a new recycling center at Avondale. The new facility replaces the Downtown Birmingham Recycling Center and also brings back glass recycling.

The new recycling facility located at 4330 1st Avenue South offers the same services previously provided at the Downtown Birmingham Recycling Center. It will accept paper, cardboard, plastics, mixed metals, aluminum, electronics and glass from Birmingham residents. However, glass for recycling will be charged at the $1 per 18 gallons or $3 for 55 gallons. Punch cards will be available for purchase in increments of $10 for the convenience of residents. The center is expected to serve between 75 and 100 people every day.

AEC plans to expand glass recycling services at the new facility. The new site is capable of recycling glass more efficiently and more sustainably. It allows for collection of large volumes on site. The accepted glass could be either loaded to trailers to be transported to other facilities. The glass could also be pulverized and sold to local markets for reuse, AEC noted.

“Alabama Environmental Center is excited to be expanding our operation,” AEC Executive Director Michael Churchman said. “The Avondale recycling center expands our recycling in the community through materials and volume.”

The Alabama Environmental Council is the oldest statewide nonprofit environmental advocacy organization in Alabama. It engages citizens toward sustainable living and stewardship of the environment. AEC’s mission is to organize and empower Alabamians to preserve the environment in a manner that is mindful of current and future generations.

Fed to Keep Large Banks' Capital Levels Unchanged, Postpones Stress Test Reforms Until 2027
The US Fed has announced that it will maintain the capital levels of large banks unchanged during the upcoming stress test cycle (corresponding to the 2026 cycle). At the same time, the US Fed is planning multidimensional reforms to this annual test, aiming to enhance its transparency. The US Fed's Vice Chair for Supervision, Bowman, revealed that adjustments to the stress capital buffer requirements for large banks will be postponed until 2027. This move is intended to provide the US Fed with sufficient time to evaluate potential flaws that may be exposed in its testing models when assessing banks' financial conditions under simulated economic downturn scenarios.
