CHARLOTTE (Scrap Monster): Eastern Carolina Vocational Center Inc. (ECVC)- a Greenville, North Carolina –based non-profit electronics recycler has received R2/RIOS certification. The certification is given in recognition of ECVC’s commitment to safe, secure and environment-friendly disposal techniques. It further ensures that its downstream vendors are secure from stolen data and that they adhere to responsible recycling practices.

According to ECVC, ECVC had added electronics recycling services to its portfolio in January 2015, by becoming part of the national CyclePoint network. It had started its efforts to earn the certification since then and has become successful within a limited period of time. ECVC General Manager Chris Richardson commended the efforts put in by employees in achieving this prestigious certification.

ECVC is a private not-for-profit corporation. We provide job training and employment services to persons with disabilities in Pitt and its surrounding counties in Eastern North Carolina. ECVC’s e-Waste DeManufacturing Facility located at 901 Staton Road handles commercial electronic waste including computers, servers, monitors, mice, keyboards, copiers, scanners, fax machines, communication devices and point of sale machines. It also provides hard drive data destruction and pickup services for businesses.

Nearly 75% of ECVC's direct workforce consists of employees with physical disabilities.

The R2/RIOS certification is solely for electronics recyclers to demonstrate to customers that electronics equipment is being recycled with the highest standards for environmental protection, worker health and safety, and data privacy, and facility security. R2/RIOS is a combination of the Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices and the Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS). R2 was developed by a broad-based cooperative of electronics recycling stakeholders that included the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state governments, manufacturers, recyclers, trade groups and non-governmental organizations. RIOS is the sole program on the market that combines quality, environmental, health and safety requirements in a single management system.
