In July 2024, China's production of ternary cathode materials reached 58,845 mt, up 19% MoM and up 3% YoY. The cumulative YoY increase from January to July was 13%. The share of 5-series ternary cathode materials was 28%, 6-series was 29%, and 8-series was 39%. Compared to the previous month, the proportion of high-nickel materials increased.

In July 2024, China's ternary cathode materials production reached 58,845 mt, up 19% MoM and 3% YoY, with a cumulative YoY increase of 13% from January to July. In terms of supply, some ternary cathode materials manufacturers reduced production in July due to weak overseas demand. However, driven by leading high-nickel manufacturers actively building inventories and significantly recovering production schedules, the overall domestic production of ternary cathode materials increased substantially in July. In July, the share of 5-series ternary materials was 28%, 6-series was 29%, and 8-series was 39%, with the proportion of high-nickel materials increasing compared to the previous month. Ronbay, Ruixiang, and Bangpu ranked as the top three in ternary cathode materials production in July, with CR3 at 45%, CR5 at 55%, and CR10 at 74%, indicating a higher market concentration compared to June.

Demand side, in July, ternary battery cell production reached 27 GWh, up 9% MoM. The procurement demand for ternary cathode materials from leading battery cell manufacturers improved, with the sales expectations for related new energy vehicle models looking positive for the upcoming "September-October peak season." Due to the impact of the new national standards, the demand for ternary battery cells in two-wheelers decreased, leading to fewer orders. The demand for power tools recovered compared to the same period last year, with current orders remaining stable. The demand for digital and 3C products continued to be weak.

In August 2024, China's ternary cathode materials production is expected to reach 60,905 mt, up 4% MoM and 8% YoY. The production of ternary cathode materials in August is expected to increase slightly. Except for a few manufacturers adjusting their production schedules and slightly reducing output, most manufacturers are expected to maintain stable or slightly increased production in August.

Polymer Solid-State Battery Layout at “Wuhan Speed”: A Comprehensive Analysis of Ion Energy’s Layout
All-solid-state batteries have entered an intensive GWh pilot production period, with 2027–2030 as the key window for small-batch vehicle installation. Planned capacity is expected to exceed 1,119 GWh by 2035, but the utilization rate from 2026 to 2030 will be only 1%–15%, indicating a severe demand mismatch, with volume ramp-up only gradually beginning after 2032.

SMM Daily Review: Spot lithium carbonate prices continued to edge up slightly on September 22
Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices continued to edge up slightly from the previous trading day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened higher today at 132,500 yuan/mt. After the open, bears briefly held the advantage, and prices consolidated lower, hitting a low of 130,200 yuan/mt. Subsequently, bargain hunting emerged at lows, and prices gradually rebounded. Around midday, bulls concentrated their efforts, and prices shot up rapidly to the day's high of 135,300 yuan/mt. In the afternoon, prices consolidated at highs, fluctuating repeatedly around 134,000 yuan/mt. Near the close, prices pulled back slightly, ultimately closing up 2.53% at 134,400 yuan/mt. Open interest was basically flat (up slightly by 84 lots). In the spot market, downstream buyers continued to purchase as needed at lows, but as prices drifted higher, buying enthusiasm turned more cautious. Upstream lithium chemical plants maintained their stance of holding prices firm and holding back from selling for spot orders. Overall, both market inquiries and actual transaction pace slowed down. On the news and sentiment front, the continued destocking of warrants, combined with confidence in short-term demand resilience, shifted sentiment from earlier pessimism to a slightly more positive tone, driving prices to drift higher.
