Major changes have taken place in the global power battery market in the first half of this year. From the "tripod" of LG Energy, Ningde era and Panasonic last year, it has gradually evolved into a "two-man struggle for hegemony" of Ningde era and LG Energy.

In the first half of this year, Ningde Times surpassed LG Energy to become the champion with a market share of nearly 30%. Panasonic, BYD and Samsung SDI ranked in the top five.

The number of batteries installed in electric vehicles worldwide was 25.4GWh in June, up 124.7 per cent from a year earlier, according to SNE Research, a South Korean market research firm. The installed capacity of power batteries in the world from January to June was 114.1 GWH, an increase of more than 1.5 times compared with the same period last year.

In June, the Ningde era once again surpassed LG, to become the top champion, with Panasonic firmly in third place, followed by BYD, SKI, Samsung SDI, AVIC Lithium, Guoxuan Tech, Vision AESC and PEVE.

Specifically, in the Ningde era, which was overtaken by the LG in May, the installed capacity in June was 7.7GW, up 60.4% from the previous month, ranking the champion, and the market share increased from 24.4% in May to 30.1% in June. The installed capacity of LG increased by 10.5% from the previous month, and the market share dropped to 24.8% from 28.9% in May, winning the runner-up.

Panasonic installed 4.0GWH, an increase of 21.2% over the previous month, and its market share dropped to 15.9% this year from 23.2% last year.

In June, SKI overtook Samsung's SDI, to fifth from sixth in May. Guoxuan high-tech rose from the ninth in May to the eighth in June. It is worth mentioning that the installed capacity of AVIC lithium battery was 0.6 GWH in June, down 14.3% from the same period last year, with a market share of 2.5%.

From the market share point of view, compared with May, June only Ningde era, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, SKI market share has increased, the market share of other enterprises have decreased to varying degrees. Among them, the market share of Ningde era increased by 5.7 percentage points, and Guoxuan Hi-Tech increased by 0.4 percentage points. LG's market share fell 4.1 percentage points, while AVIC Lithium and Panasonic both fell 1.1 percentage points.

The top ten manufacturers of power batteries for electric vehicles in the world are taken over by China, Japan and South Korea, of which five are state-owned. Ningde Times is the largest power battery manufacturer in the world, with a global market share of 30.1%. BYD (6.8%), AVIC Lithium (2.5%), Vision AESC (1.2%,), Guoxuan Tech (1.9%).

The surge in installed capacity in the Ningde era is mainly due to the strong growth in sales of Hongguang MINIEV, Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3, as well as ideal ONE, Euler Black Cat and other models.

South Korea has three companies, LG Energy (24.8 per cent), Samsung SDI (4.7 per cent) and SKI (5.4 per cent). Compared with May this year, apart from the 1.2% increase in SKI's market share, both LG Energy and Samsung SDI's market share have declined to varying degrees.

The increase in LG energy installation is mainly due to strong sales of Tesla Model Y (made in China), Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach- E. Samsung's SDI growth was driven by increased sales of the Fiat 500 and Audi E-tron EV. In terms of SK innovation, Kia Niro EV, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kona Electric (Europe) sales growth has driven its rapid growth.

There are two companies in Japan, Panasonic (15.9%) and PEVE (0.8%). Compared with the same period last year and May this year, the market share of the two companies decreased further.

With the continuous expansion of the Chinese market and the accelerated entry of Chinese enterprises such as Ningde era and BYD into the European market, it is expected that the market environment that South Korean and Japanese enterprises will face in the future will be more severe.

In addition, the global installed capacity of power batteries from January to June was 114.1 GWH, an increase of more than 1.5 times compared with the same period last year. The installed capacity of the world's top 10 power battery enterprises is 107.4GWH, the market share is as high as 94.1%, and the market concentration is further improved, of which Ningde Times, LG Energy Solutions (referred to as LG Energy), Panasonic, BYD and Samsung SDI ranked in the top five.

Specifically, the installed capacity of Ningde era in the first half of the year was 34.1 GWH, an increase of more than 2.3 times over the same period last year, with a market share of nearly 30%, surpassing LG Energy to become the champion. Panasonic installed capacity was 17.1 GWH, up 69.3% from the same period last year, with a market share of 15%, down 7.4% from the same period last year. Firmly in third place.

BYD overtook Samsung SDI, to fourth, with a market share of 6.8 per cent. Samsung's SDI market share fell 1.2 percentage points to fifth place. The biggest change is that Vision AESC, fell from seventh last year to ninth this year, and its market share fell by 2.0 percent.

It is worth noting that in the first half of last year, LG Energy and Ningde era competed with each other and clenched each other. Although the former won the championship in the end, the gap between the two was not big. In terms of cumulative installed capacity, the difference was only 0.2 GWH, and the difference in market share was only 0.4 percentage points.

In the first half of this year, Ningde Times exceeded LG Energy in both installed capacity and market share (installed capacity exceeded 6.1GWH and market share exceeded 5.4%).

Summary: with the rapid development of China's new energy vehicle market, the global market share of Chinese power battery enterprises is gradually increasing. At present, the global power battery market has basically formed a pattern of fighting between China and South Korea and accompanying Japan.
