Published: Sep 16, 2020 11:37

SMM: according to the certificate production data of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the output of new energy passenger vehicles in August 2020 was 95500, an increase of 43.5% over the same period last year and 12.1% from the previous month, achieving positive growth for the second consecutive month compared with the same period last year.

Hongguang MINI output exceeds Model 3

Production of pure electric models in August was 75000, up 10% from the previous month and 33.7% from a year earlier.

In terms of models, Wuling Hongguang MINI EV ranked first with a month-on-month increase of 95.8%, surpassing domestic Tesla Model 3. The top three models are NEDC battery version of 120km (LZW7004EVJDJ), lithium iron phosphate version of 170km (LZW7004EVJDAM) and NEDC battery version of 170km (LZW7004EVJDAG), with production of 3358, 3332 and 3029 respectively. The battery supplier of the ternary version is Xingheng Power supply, and the battery supplier of the lithium iron phosphate version is Guoxuan Hi-Tech. In addition to these two battery suppliers, Huating Power has also joined Hongguang MINI's battery supplier list. In August, a total of 4423 macro MINI were equipped with batteries provided by Huating Power.

Tesla Model 3, which ranked second, increased slightly by 1.2% compared with the previous month. In August, Tesla's output was still dominated by the low-life version (NEDC 455km or 445km version), producing a total of 10002 vehicles. The long-lasting version of NEDC 668km produced 2710 vehicles in August, down 36.4% from July.

From January to August this year, the cumulative output of domestic Tesla Model 3 reached 75000.

Let's take a look at the production of several popular electric cars.

After the Xiaopeng P7 raised production to more than 2000 vehicles in July, August continued to maintain the July production level, of which the NEDC extended 656km version produced a total of 1754 vehicles, accounting for 80.4% of the total output. The battery supplier is Jiangsu Times.

BYD Han finally ushered in an increase in its own production in August, with a month-on-month increase of 94.3% to more than 1000 vehicles, but that level should still be a far cry from BYD's ideal output.

The Aion V, the third model of GAC NE's Aion series, also boosted production in August, producing a total of 1748 vehicles. Among them, the NEDC 500km version (GAM6460BEVC0C) produces 1085 vehicles, and the battery supplier comes from Funeng Technology.

Ideal ONE achieves a new high of output

Production of mixed passenger cars in August was 21000, up 20.5 per cent from the previous month and 95.2 per cent year-on-year.

In terms of models, the ideal ONE had a clear advantage in August, setting a new monthly production record this year, exceeding 3000 vehicles, an increase of 47.3% from the previous month. The second and third models, from SAIC-Volkswagen's Tuguan L and FAW-Volkswagen's TAYRON GTE, increased by 64.6 per cent and 355.1 per cent respectively compared with the previous month.

The mixed version of BYD Han was also officially mass-produced in August, bringing down 1233 cars in the first month. Unlike the pure electric version, the plugged-in version of BYD does not use a blade battery, but a ternary battery made by BYD itself.

SAIC GM Wuling has a monthly output of nearly 20,000.

In August 2020, a total of 19 car companies produced more than 1,000 cars, and the top 10 car companies all achieved positive growth.

SAIC GM Wuling, with Baojun E series and Hongguang MINI EV, up 45.4% month-on-month, ranked first with a total production of 17000 vehicles, the momentum is quite fierce.

For its part, BYD produced 17 models in August, with the top three models being BYD Qin EV, BYD e2 and BYD Tang DM, with production of 3069, 2151 and 1946 respectively.

In terms of new forces in domestic car building, major car companies have achieved positive month-on-month growth except Weima.

The output of Lulai in August increased slightly by 2.1% from the previous month, of which the output of ES8 in August increased by 42.7% from the previous month, accounting for 32.3% of the total output in August.

Production of Weima fell 33.5% in August from the previous month, with the highest output being the Weima EX5 (NEDC has a mileage of 520km and the vehicle model is SZS6460A30BEV), with a production of 801 vehicles.

BAIC R&D Unveils High-Performance Sodium-Ion Battery Prototypes with Industry-Leading Specs
SMM learned that BAIC R&D recently announced the successful development of sodium-ion battery prototypes. The first prismatic battery pack using prismatic battery cells achieved an energy density exceeding 170 Wh/kg, placing it in the industry’s top tier. It also supports 4C ultra-fast charging, enabling recharging in 11 minutes. Its temperature-range adaptability and safety performance are outstanding, with stable operation across an ultra-wide range from -40°C to 60°C, energy retention above 92% at -20°C, and no risk of thermal runaway under extreme scenarios. At present, this sodium-ion battery has completed sample finalization, established mass-production processes for prismatic products, and filed 20 patents around core technologies. BAIC has also leveraged this to complete a full technology roadmap covering lithium batteries, solid-state batteries, and sodium-ion batteries, and has mastered a complete set of core sodium-ion battery technologies.
