Shanghai eyes smart manufacturing hub by 2021

SHANGHAI, Jul 19 (SMM) – Shanghai aims to become a national stronghold for smart manufacturing by strengthening the integration of 5G, artificial intelligence, the Internet, big data and manufacturing by 2021, according to a three-year plan from the city’s commission of economy and informatisation at the end of June.

The plan will make intelligent manufacturing an over 130-billion-yuan industry, with robotics and system integration accounting for 60 billion yuan.

The city pledged to build two world-class smart manufacturing clusters, for automobiles and electronic information.

Efforts to achieve those goals will include fostering 10 listed companies on the country's technology-focused board, establishing and improving 50 standards on smart manufacturing, as well as cultivating two to three national, and three to five public service platforms of industrial influence.

Shanghai is also eyeing industrial synergies across the Yangtze River delta region, with establishing 100 national level smart factories, 1,000 plants with brand recognition across the region, and promote the intelligent upgrading of 10,000 factories.
