The fire reportedly broke out early Thursday, when contractor Monadelphous was shutting down for repairs, but fortunately there were no casualties.
Cape Lambert Iron Ore Port is located about 1250 kilometers north of Perth, the capital of western Australia.
The terminal is one of two terminals used by Rio Tinto to transport iron ore from the (Pilbara) mining area in Pilbala, Australia. According to the company's website, the terminal has an annual capacity of 205 million tons.
A spokesman for Rio Tinto said, "the emergency services department has responded to the accident and the fire has been brought under safety control." "the important thing is that no one was hurt and we remain committed to ensuring the safety of our team during the recovery phase." The company also noted that the operation of some of the facilities had been restarted, but that the affected areas were still closed.
It is not clear what impact the fire will have on production and shipping at Cape Lambert.
Cape Lambert is a joint venture between Rio Tinto (53%), Mitsui (33%) and Nippon Steel Sumitomo Metals (14%).
