SHANGHAI, Jun. 17 (SMM) – Although China has been heavily promoting lithium batteries, lead-acid battery maintained its leading position in electric vehicle market.

Li Xiaoping, technician from Narada, said lithium battery not only performs less well than lead-acid battery, but also shows low recoverable rate, as lead-acid battery purchasers could get a 30% repayment for returning the scrap batteries to suppliers, which is an important advantage over lithium battery.

In addition, lithium iron phosphate battery which was introduced as storage battery for power stations was also less favored than lead-acid battery due to low investment and safety of the latter and as 50% of lead-acid batteries could be recycled.

Price is another vital factor constraining the wide application of lithium battery which has advantage in size and endurance, since the price for lithium battery is some three times that for lead-acid battery. Cost performance of lithium battery is expected to be pronounced in 2014 when lithium battery price is lowered to two folds of lead-acid battery price.
