SMM Weekly Forecast on China's Cobalt Market (Apr.11-15)

SMM expects, prices of will be in the RMB 290-318/kg range for refined cobalt.

SHANGHAI, Apr. 8 (SMM) --

China's oversupply of cobalt will not easily change in the short term, which will be the key factor weighing on base metal prices. Haunted by shorts sentiment, MB cobatl prices have fallen by 13% within recent month. However, domestic cobalt producers' willingness to cut prices further is weak due high cost pressure from international oil price hike and inflation. Although MB cobalt prices have fallen, slipping pace of domestic cobalt prices will be slow.

SMM expects, prices of will be in the RMB 290-318/kg range for refined cobalt, between RMB 67-70/kg for cobalt chloride, RMB 58-60/kg for cobalt sulfate, around RMB 215-220/kg for tricobalt tetroxide, and between RMB 233-235/kg for lithium cobalt oxide.

The average refined cobalt prices stand at 431,500 yuan/mt as of November 30, hitting a record high in the past three years. The booming growth of global NEVs production and sales drives the demand for cobalt. The worsening of COVID in Africa and international shipping led to a continued decline in the imports of cobalt raw materials. According to customs data, China imported 5399 mt of cobalt raw material in metal content in October, a month-on-month decrease of 31% and year-on-year decrease of 49%. The imports of cobalt raw materials totalled 73,700 mt in metal content from January to October, up 3% YoY.
