BMW Pulls Billion-Dollar Battery Order from Northvolt Due to Delayed Delivery and Quality Concerns

【BMW cancels overseas battery order worth billions due to delayed delivery】According to a report by the German magazine "Manager Magazin" on June 20, BMW has withdrawn a battery order worth 2 billion euros (about 15.57 billion yuan). This order was originally signed in 2020 as a "long-term" battery supply contract between BMW and Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt. At that time, BMW ordered the fifth-generation batteries planned by Northvolt, which would be produced "100% using wind and hydroelectric power" and delivered to BMW in 2024.

There are two reported reasons for BMW to cancel the order: first, the quality of the batteries provided by Northvolt "has not yet met expectations"; the second and more important factor is that Northvolt failed to deliver the batteries on time.

Shenhuo Group started construction of a 50,000-tonne-per-year high-performance aluminum foil project for sodium-ion batteries in Shangqiu, Henan on Sep 16. The project includes about 40,000 sqm of workshops and smart warehousing, with 1850mm and 2150mm foil rolling mills, producing 8-20μm foil for Na-ion cathodes and anodes over a 24-month build period. Output will cover power and energy storage batteries, complementing its existing lithium battery foil capacity for a dual-track lithium-sodium strategy.
