Shangtai Technology: Demand for Anode Materials Is Expected to Rebound in 2024, With Prices Likely to Recover.

On the afternoon of May 13rd, Shantai Technology (001301) stated at the annual performance briefing that in 2023, the overall growth level of NEV power batteries and energy storage batteries remained high. However, the overall growth in the anode materials industry, where the company is located, has slowed down. Due to the sustained high prosperity of the industry in previous years, a large number of enterprises have been attracted to cross-industry investments, and major companies in the industry have continued to expand their production capacity. The overall capacity of the industry remains at a high level. With the slowdown in market demand growth, some homogeneous products cannot maintain their original price levels, leading to a situation where the industry as a whole experiences "increased volume but decreased revenue."

Looking ahead to 2024, Shantai Technology stated that the supply side of lithium battery anode materials is still in a state of structural overcapacity. However, as the destocking of the NEV industry comes to an end, the situation of slowing demand growth will improve, and market demand is expected to rebound. The prices of anode materials are expected to see some recovery in 2024, and the sales of anode materials are expected to increase.

Shangtai Technology also mentioned that the current anode material prices are at a historical low, with limited room for further decline. From the perspective of the industry chain, while anode material prices are decreasing, the costs of raw materials and graphite processing have also decreased. The company will continue its policy of "cost reduction and efficiency improvement," internally enhancing technical processes and optimizing production procedures to drive cost reduction and efficiency improvement, striving to increase the company's profitability in the fierce market competition.

In terms of technology, Shantai Technology stated that silicon-carbon anode materials are one of the company's key research and development directions for 2024. Currently, differentiated technological routes such as silicon-carbon anode materials and hard carbon anode materials for sodium-ion batteries are in the early stages of industrialisation, and the company has not yet set up related production lines. However, the company has accumulated certain technical expertise in silicon-carbon anode materials and will continue to increase corresponding R&D investment and product layout in 2024. There are certain differences in the production process compared to graphite anode materials. The company will engage in extensive cooperation with research institutions and external organizations, continuously recruit talent, and at the appropriate time, attempt to build production lines to achieve mass production breakthroughs for the corresponding products.

The cobalt industry chain remained under pressure this week. Refined cobalt shot up and then pulled back amid phased purchasing, with the electronic trading price retreating from 289,000 yuan/mt to around 275,000 yuan/mt. Quotes and transactions for intermediate products remained absent, and sales pressure on miners gradually accumulated. Cobalt salt demand was weak, and cobalt sulphate fell into a negative feedback loop of "price cuts—losses—raw material declines—lower costs," with some recycled-source quotes dropping to 57,000–58,000 yuan/mt. Cobalt chloride and Co3O4 continued to weaken under downstream production cuts and sluggish end-use consumption. Cobalt powder downstream users were still digesting high-priced inventory, and new purchasing had yet to begin. Ternary cathode precursor and ternary cathode material prices fell along with nickel, cobalt, and lithium raw materials, with sluggish power demand prompting enterprises to turn cautious in quoting and purchasing. LCO's "September peak season" expectations fell through, with weakening cost support and insufficient end-user stockpiling, leaving short-term prices still at risk of further decline. Some enterprises may carry out small-scale stockpiling before the National Day holiday, but whether the industry chain can stabilize still depends on the recovery of end-use demand and the pace of inventory destocking.

According to a decision published by the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Regulatory Authority for Subcontracting in the Private Sector (ARSP) on September 15, Glencore’s Kamoto Copper Company (KCC) and Mutanda Mining (MUMI) have been ordered to terminate existing contracts with subcontractors that do not meet local legal eligibility requirements and remove them from their supplier lists. The decision followed a regulatory review of the two companies’ suppliers and service providers. Of the 1,427 suppliers and service providers submitted by KCC, only 472 were registered by ARSP as eligible, while 955 failed to meet the required conditions. At Mutanda, 548 of the 1,133 submitted suppliers were deemed eligible, while 585 failed to qualify. Both companies are also required to submit remediation plans to ARSP within 30 days of receiving the notice and are prohibited from signing new subcontracting agreements with the affected companies until they achieve compliance. KCC and Mutanda are both major copper-cobalt assets in the DRC. Continued enforcement of the measures could increase supply-chain adjustment and compliance-management pressures for the two operations.
