On November 8, General Motors and Stellantis reached a cooperation with Niron Magnetics, a US start-up, to develop the next generation of rare earth-free permanent magnet motors. The company claimed to have a patented method for making high-performance magnets using only iron and nitrogen, both of which are readily available and have no need to import rare earths. Niron CEO Jonathan Rowntree said the technology could also lower electric vehicle motor prices, but refued to disclosed the falling range. Permanent magnets are an integral part of countless components in cars, and what they have the biggest impact on GM will be in the powertrains of electric vehicles. Currently, about 90% of rare earth magnet supplies rely on China.
