Fed Interest Rate Hikes to Expose Balance Sheet Problems at Many US Banks

The US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) continued its streak of rate hikes for more than a year, raising the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 5-5.25%.

The Fed's move was widely in line with market expectations. It is worth noting that this policy statement did not refer to the language that previously suggested that interest rate hikes would definitely continue.

The statement did note the impact of a "credit crunch" on the economy going forward, and said the FOMC would "take into account the cumulative tightening of monetary policy, the lagged effects of monetary policy on economic activity and inflation, and economic and financial developments." Still, the Fed may be fighting a two-front war, and its rate hikes could expose balance sheet problems at many U.S. banks.

Cora identifies new oxide gold mineralisation near planned Sanankoro plant
[SMM Gold Flash] Cora Gold announced that reconnaissance drilling at Dakounkoura South identified gold mineralisation over approximately 500 metres of strike at its Sanankoro project in southern Mali. The target lies within two kilometres of the planned processing plant. Four holes intersected mineralisation, with results including 16 metres at 0.85 g/t gold from 20 metres and 35 metres at 0.40 g/t from five metres. Cora has completed 14,081 metres of reverse-circulation drilling under its expanded programme, while diamond drilling continues. The work aims to increase Sanankoro’s existing resource of 1.044 million ounces at 1.04 g/t and extend the 10.2-year reserve mine life outlined in its 2025 feasibility study. Dakounkoura South remains outside the existing resource estimate and requires further drilling before its potential contribution to future plant feed can be established.

Gold Fields reports higher output at South Deep and Tarkwa as group costs rise
[SMM Gold Flash] Gold Fields reports that South Deep in South Africa produced 80,700 ounces in the September quarter, up 5% from the preceding quarter. Tarkwa in Ghana produced 101,000 ounces, up 4% quarter on quarter. South Deep benefited from higher mining volumes and grades, while improved plant availability and utilisation supported a 5% increase in tonnes milled at Tarkwa. Across the group, attributable gold-equivalent production declined 3% year on year to 605,000 ounces, while all-in sustaining costs increased 26% to US$1,965/oz. Higher royalties linked to gold prices, stronger producer-country currencies and increased input costs contributed to the cost pressure. Gold Fields maintained its expectation of reaching the upper end of its 2.4–2.6 million-ounce annual production guidance and retained its AISC forecast of US$1,800–2,000/oz.

[SMM Gold Flash] AngloGold Ashanti's gold production declined 9% year on year to 696,000 ounces in the quarter ended 30 September, compared with 768,000 ounces a year earlier. All-in sustaining costs increased 26% to US$2,170/oz. African operations faced flooding at Iduapriem in Ghana, infrastructure and safety-related constraints at Obuasi, and lower grades alongside a temporary underground shutdown at Sukari in Egypt. The company retained its 2026 production guidance of 2.80–3.17 million ounces. Dewatering has restored access to higher-grade mining areas at Iduapriem, while waste stripping at Sukari and the underground ramp-up at Obuasi are expected to support a stronger fourth quarter. Delivery of the unchanged forecast depends on these improvements translating into higher output during the final quarter.
