Mercedes-Benz unveiled its last new internal combustion engine model, the new E-Class, on April 25, which will be produced in Germany and China and launched in Europe in the third quarter of this year, according to foreign media reports.
The successor to the E-Class will use an all-new platform which is suitable for battery-powered cars. It is worth noting that the new E-Class Saloon is already available in a hybrid version.
Markus Schaefer, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes-Benz, said at a press roundtable that the inclusion of batteries in older cars is a compromise. And the company already has an all-electric version of the E-Class, which is the EQE.
The new E-Class Saloon features an infotainment screen across the front of the vehicle, a rear-seat entertainment system, and a Mercedes Star projection in the brake lights, with entertainment options in the vehicle suitable for audiences from Europe to the Korean and Chinese markets. The new E-Class sedan will be available in the US at the end of this year and in China in early 2024.
Mercedes-Benz aims to sell only pure electric vehicles worldwide by 2030, the company explained, adding that it will only do so "where the market allows".
However, Mercedes-Benz said in July 2021 that it would reduce its investment in the internal combustion engine and plug-in hybrid technology by 80% between 2019 and 2026 and invest 40 billion euros ($44 billion) in electrification between 2022 and 2030.
In addition to Mercedes-Benz, some other car companies are about to abandon internal combustion engine vehicles. VW, for example, has announced that the eighth-generation Golf will be the company's last new car with an internal combustion engine.
But Mercedes' main rival, BMW, has kept an open mind and has not set a specific date for the cessation of production of internal combustion engine cars. The company will stop producing internal combustion engines in Germany from 2024, but will still produce cars using engines imported from other countries.
