In August, the global electric car market broke the record set in July, with sales of more than 516000 vehicles, up 114 per cent from a year earlier, the third-best performance on record. In the same month, the market share of electric cars was 7.7%, up 0.6 percentage points from the previous month. Of these, the performance of pure electric vehicles (365000) continued to outperform plug-in hybrids, accounting for 71 per cent of electric vehicle sales and 5.4 per cent of the global car market.
In the first eight months of this year, global electric vehicle sales totaled more than 3.55 million, accounting for 6.6 per cent of the global car market. Given that sales in the year-end months are usually stronger, global electric vehicle sales are expected to easily exceed 6 million units for the whole year and may even reach the milestone of 7 million. But in December, global electric vehicle sales could break 1 million, electric vehicle market share could reach more than 10 per cent, and electric vehicle sales in the world's three major car markets (China, Europe and the US) are all expected to hit record highs.
August list of the world's best-selling Top 20 electric cars: Chinese models occupy 12 seats and, Model Y sales surpass Model 3
In terms of August sales alone, it is worth noting that Wuling Hongguang MINIEV has retained the title of the world's best-selling electric car for the first time for two months in a row, thanks to its record sales of 41188 vehicles. In addition, Tesla Model Y beat Tesla Model 3 in second place with a sales advantage of more than 5000 vehicles, so Model 3 ranked third.
There are also many attractions outside the top three, with BYD Qin Plus PHEV beating Volkswagen ID.4 to fourth place with record sales of 13043 vehicles. In addition, sales of the BYD Qin Plus BEV version are also rising, ranking 10th with sales of 7633 vehicles. Taken together, BYD Qin Plus sold a staggering 20676 vehicles. This makes people can't help but expect that BYD's medium-sized car will have a head-on confrontation with Tesla Model 3 in the future.
It is also worth mentioning that Chinese electric models accounted for 12 seats in the global best-selling Top 20 electric car list in August, of which sales of seven Chinese electric vehicles also hit a new high. In addition to the above-mentioned Wuling Hongguang MINIEV, BYD Qin Plus PHEV and BYD Qin Plus BEV, ranked No. 6 ideal ONE, No. 7 SAIC Rongwei Cornway EV, No. 8 BYD Song Pro PHEV and No. 15 Xiaopeng P7 all had new records.
Traditional carmakers are also increasing their delivery of electric vehicles, notably the Volkswagen ID.3, which currently ranks ninth with 8025 sales, while the 17th Ford Mustang Mach-E and 18th Hyundai Ioniq 5 continue to perform well. The performance of Jeep Wrangler PHEV, which ranked 13th, was also impressive, being the only plug-in hybrid from a traditional car company on the Top 20 list, which made people look forward to the future performance of the all-electric version of Wrangler.
Outside the top 20, the performance of several Chinese electric models is worth mentioning, such as the production of the Negro V (4611) and the Zero run T03 (4409) are continuing to climb, and sales of the BYD yuan EV (4784) are also recovering, which is expected to be seen in the Top 20 list soon.
In terms of cumulative sales in the first eight months, the biggest improvement was made by the Biadiqin Plus PHEV, which climbed eight places to ninth, and is expected to compete with the ideal ONE for fifth place in the near future.
In addition, the Great Wall Euler Black Cat climbed to 10th place, and Auto Rongwei Collaway made the list for the first time, ranking 18th, highlighting the current popularity of urban electric cars in China. When it comes to new faces, Ford's new all-electric car, the Mustang Mach-E, is also on the list, putting Ford on the list with two electric cars. Tesla (Model Y and Model 3), Volkswagen (ID.3 and ID.4) and BYD (Han EV and Qin Plus PHEV)) also have two cars each on the list.
Outside the top 20, the Xiaopeng P7 has an eye-catching performance, with only 1000 cars short of making it into the Top 20 list, and it is expected to be seen on the list soon, bringing more than 10 Chinese brands to the list.
From the unexpected success of Wuling Hongguang MINIEV to the jump of BYD Qin Plus, we can see that the strength of Chinese electric models should not be underestimated. It is particularly worth mentioning here that ideal ONE, first of all is not a media-friendly start-up, its only current model is an expensive large SUV, positioning high-end market, and the technology (add-on electric car) is already obsolete and considered obsolete by other car companies (such as BMW and GM). Nevertheless, it is becoming the best-selling full-size model in the global electric car market. Ranked sixth in the cumulative sales rankings in the previous August.
In August, the world's best-selling Top 20 electric car brand list: BYD topped the list, Xiaopeng entered the list
BYD is becoming more and more powerful, breaking the record again in August sales (61014 vehicles, up 334% from a year earlier), allowing it to beat Tesla in the monthly sales competition for the second time in a row. And BYD's record-breaking road seems to be continuing, and it is expected that it will continue to put pressure on Tesla in the championship battle in the third quarter.
In third place, SAIC GM Wuling also set a new record for August sales, mainly due to the strong performance of Wuling Hongguang MINIEV and SAIC GM Wuling's performance made its parent SAIC Group one of the winners of the month.
Toyota's performance in august was also impressive, with 9748 electric cars sold, up 191% from a year earlier, mainly thanks to RAV4 PHEV. But the biggest surprise came from the ideal, which ranked 17th, with the brand selling a record 9433 electric cars. Jeep, which ranked 18th, also performed well, thanks to the success of Wrangler PHEV.
It is worth noting that Xiaopeng broke into the Top 20 list in August, while Renault is currently ranked 19th, and Nissan is missing from the list.
In terms of cumulative sales in the first eight months, the gap between Yadira and Volkswagen is larger than that of Volkswagen, and is approaching the second place of SAIC GM Wuling, which currently leads only 8000 vehicles. It is expected that BYD may overtake SAIC GM Wuling next month.
Hyundai is also happy. Because of Renault's decline, the brand climbed to 11th place, while Toyota, which ranked 13th, is now only 700 vehicles behind Renault, and more car rankings are expected to change in September.
Other improvements include the Great Wall, which is currently ranked 15th because of the strong performance of the Euler Black Cat. Changan, which ranks 19th, has a gap of only 600cars between the 18th place and Changan, which is probably due to a shortage of chips, resulting in a lower-than-expected performance. in the medium term, Changan may be excluded from the Top 20 electric brand list, as there are many brands outside the top 20 that are increasing electric vehicle sales, such as ideal at No. 21, Jeep at No. 22 and Xiaopeng at No. 23.
In terms of market share of Automotive Group, Tesla is still in the lead, accounting for 13% of the global electric vehicle market, down 5% from the same period last year, followed by SAIC (SAIC + SAIC GM Wuling) with a market share of 12%. Volkswagen ranks third with an 11% market share.
Although Tesla seems to have lost some market share, this does not mean that the brand is going downhill. As the electric vehicle market matures, the market share of electric vehicle leaders will be lost to other newcomers. It's only natural that the market will become more balanced.
In fact, on the Top 20 list of cumulative sales of electric car brands in the previous August, only two brands, SAIC GM Wuling and BYD, increased their market share. In the past 12 months, most brands have seen their market share decline, some even sharply, such as Renault, which now has only half of what it was a year ago. In addition, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Ford only maintained last year's market share.
Once the transformation of electric cars is fully consolidated, it is not clear whether the ranking of these brands will change. But what is clear is that the electric car market is more competitive than the traditional fuel car market.
