Orders at copper processing enterprises improved

Orders at cable companies have gradually picked up last week. Boosted by the start of infrastructure projects and other projects, orders at cable companies have recovered nearly 80%. Although the northern market has recovered slowly, many cable companies have recently received orders from the State Grid. With the depletion of downstream inventories and consumption improvement, orders for wire and cable companies are expected to increase after the Qingming Festival.

SHANGHAI, Apr 7 (SMM)—Wire and cable: Orders at cable companies have gradually picked up last week.

Copper rods produced with copper cathode: Demand from wires and cables has increased, growing new orders for copper rod companies last week. However, the current price difference between copper rods produced with secondary copper and with copper cathode  pressured copper rod companies using copper cathode as feedstock. The performance was much weaker compared to normal levels of previous years. In March, many copper rod companies using copper cathode had extremely high inventories, and some even chose to stop or reduce production to reduce the financial pressure. We understood that most companies have resumed production. Consumption of copper rods using copper cathode will also gradually improve on the back of bid solicitations by grid companies and the release of wire and cable demand.

Copper tube: The high season set in last week. According to the survey, many copper tube companies received large volumes of orders in late March, with a delivery period of up to 10 days. Supply has fallen short of demand. March to May is the peak season for copper tubes. Orders have exceeded the level of the same period in previous years despite high copper prices. Production schedules at air conditioning plants are also optimistic. According to SMM, the production schedules of major domestic air-conditioning companies in April increased by  33% year-on-year, higher than March. The operating rate of the entire copper tube industry is improving.

Enamelled wire: Orders of enamelled wire companies have not changed much, and the overall performance is good. The current orders are not as brisk as last year, but producers have maintained full production. Companies placed orders at lows, and demand remains strong.

Data Source Statement: Except for publicly available information, all other data are processed by SMM based on publicly available information, market communication, and relying on SMM‘s internal database model. They are for reference only and do not constitute decision-making recommendations.

Zambia to Reopen Key DRC Mineral Export Route After Rain Damage Disrupted Transport
Zambia’s Minister of Infrastructure said the main corridor for the DRC’s exports of copper, cobalt, and other minerals was expected to reopen after transport was disrupted by road damage. The DRC is Africa’s largest copper producer and the world’s second-largest copper producer by production. The DRC is also the world’s leading supplier of cobalt, with cobalt production accounting for more than 70% of global production, and most cobalt is exported together with other critical battery minerals.Kasumbalesa is the busiest transit point for the DRC’s metal cargo (mainly bound for China and the US). On Sunday, traffic at the crossing was suspended after heavy rains washed away parts of the road.So far, no mining company has reported that shipments of copper or cobalt have been impeded.

Drone Attack on US Embassy in Riyadh; Israel Strikes Tehran and Beirut, Trump Promises Response Measures
The US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was attacked by a drone on the 3rd local time, causing a fire and partial damage to the building. Meanwhile, the Israeli military announced that it was simultaneously carrying out airstrikes on Tehran, the capital of Iran, and Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, further escalating the intensity of the conflict in the Middle East. In response to the embassy attack, US President Trump said Washington would announce response measures “soon,” and revised his remarks to say that “there is no need to deploy ground troops.” On the same day, Trump claimed on social media that the US has “almost unlimited” ammunition reserves, and that “with these reserves alone, we can keep fighting forever and win very beautifully.”
