SMM7 March 29: the president of the Italian Iron and Steel Federation-Federacciai said in an interview that due to the coronavirus pandemic and the decline in (AngelorMittal Italia) production in ArcelorMittal, Italy, and the decline in market demand, especially in the automotive industry, steel production in the country is expected to decline by about 15% this year.

Italy has closed all steel mills except ArcelorMittal Italy and Arvedi since mid-March because it was the first country in Europe to be attacked by novel coronavirus.

In 2019, Italian steel production fell 5.3 per cent year-on-year to 23.192 million tonnes, below the EU average of 4.9 per cent to 159.4 million tonnes.

According to the latest data from the World Iron and Steel Association, the EU produced 68.3 million tons of crude steel in the first half of this year, down 18.7 per cent from a year earlier.

Italy is the EU's second-largest producer, with steel production falling 9.7 per cent to 10.08 million tons in the first half of this year.
