SMM6, 19 March: Vale (Vale SA) said on Tuesday that it was considering building a new railway and port in the Brazilian state of Para in preparation for the expansion of its Carajas Serra Sul iron mine.
Carajas Serra Sul Iron Mine is the largest mining project in the company's history.
The new railway will extend 400km from the current Carajas railway to the port of Vila do Conde in the state of Maranhao in northeastern Brazil.
Last month Vale said last month that it was considering doubling the annual production of Serra Sul Carajas iron ore, where its giant S11D mine is located, to 150 million tons a year, which would allow the company to reduce the use of tailing dams.
Vale expects the S11D project to produce 75 million tons of iron ore this year and 90 million tons by 2020.
