SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Novelis Inc.,-the Atlanta-head quartered global aluminum company sees rapid growth in aluminum sheet demand from automotive industry. The new emission rules in Europe may boost the use of aluminum sheet in automobiles by nearly five-fold to 1.8 million tons by 2020. The sheet sales to carmakers including Audi and Ford are likely to rise over three-fold.

 

The company Vice Chairman Debnarayan Bhattacharya stated during a press conference in Mumbai that the automotive aluminum sheet shipments by the company currently constitute 9% of the total sales of the company. The company sees the percentage share of aluminum sheet shipments to rise up to 25% by 2020. Meanwhile, the share of beverage cans will decline from 60% to 50%, added Bhattacharya.

 

The regulatory policies in the US to cut carbon emissions may is likely to prompt automakers to use more aluminum. More vehicles are likely to have aluminum bodies. The company is already a supplier of aluminum sheets to Ford’s Ford-150 pickup truck- one of the most popular models in North America.

 

The European regulations also call for use of lighter automotive bodies and parts to reduce average carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles. This may lead to more automotive producers switching over from steel to lighter aluminum, the company noted.
