Turkish Iron Ore Imports Declined in April; Jan-Apr Imports Up 16.5%, Says TUIK

According to latest data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the country's iron ore imports during the month of April this year rose sharply over the previous month.

ANKARA (Scrap Monster): According to latest data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the country's iron ore imports during the month of April this year rose sharply over the previous month. However, the imports were down 11.5% over the previous year. The imports during Jan-Apr '14 were 16.5% higher when compared with the previous year.

The country's iron ore imports totaled 775,955 tons during April '14. The imports during the first four months of the year totaled 2.34 million tons.

During April, the largest exporter of iron ore to Turkey was Sweden. The iron ore imports from Sweden amounted to 414,184 tons. The imports from Sweden constituted more than 50% of the total imports by Turkey during the month. The imports from Sweden soared nearly 139% over the previous year.

The second largest supplier of iron ore to Turkey was Brazil. The imports from Brazil totaled 168,378 tons, falling 51% from the previous year. In third place was Russia with 164,243 tons.

The import value generated by iron ore during April this year amounted to $123 million. The revenues fell sharply by 14% when compared with the same month a year before.

The TUIK data also indicates that the country's pig iron output and crude steel production decreased during April.
