Sumitomo Expects Nickel Supply to Fall Short of Demand in 2016

Despite a surplus seen in nickel market at present, Japan’s largest nickel producer Sumitomo Metal Mining predicts that nickel supply will be no long able to meet demand since 2016.
SHANGHAI, Jun. 7 (SMM) – Despite a surplus seen in nickel market at present, Japan’s largest nickel producer Sumitomo Metal Mining (Sumitomo) predicts that nickel supply will be no long able to meet demand since 2016. Sumitomo announced its plan to build a second nickel smelter in 2021 earlier this year to improve its annual output to 150,000 mt (nickel content). 
 
Sumitomo plans to produce 100,000 mt of nickel this year. Taganito – company’s nickel smelting project in the Philippines has started processing nickel ore, but will not start business operation until autumn this year. Sumitomo’s nickel output in 2011 was 65,000 mt (nickel content).
