SHANGHAI, Feb.20 (SMM) – BHP, CML and other mainstream manganese ore suppliers hiked offers by USD 0.25-0.5/mtu, increasing purchasing costs at traders by RMB 1.57-3/mtu. Demand from downstream alloy producers, however, remained sluggish, increasing risks for importers to replenish stocks.
Chinese traders gradually returned to work after holiday, and kept offer firm. Some small traders hiked offers, but most large traders still hold back goods. According SMM sources, some SMEs alloy producers' willingness to halt production is strong.
SMM believes that current prices were too high for alloy producers. The high production costs and low bidding prices for alloy from steel mills will fore some alloy producers to exit market.
