SHANGHAI, Jul. 16 (SMM) -- Data from China Customs show China’s alumina imports in June increased 173.18% YoY, but fell to 310,000 mt, down 56.94% MoM. Total YTD imports through June totaled 2.47 million mt, up 161.38% YoY. A recent SMM survey reveals the major cause behind high imports is falling alumina prices overseas. The average FOB alumina price in Australia, the major bauxite supplier to China, fell in June by USD 7/mt, to USD 312/mt, and then fell further to USD 305/mt in July. The CFR price at Lianyungang port also fell to USD 328/mt. Some alumina producers which rely on imported bauxite have cut output due to higher Indonesian bauxite export duties, which boosted demand for imported alumina.
