China's 2011 Coal Output up 8.7% on Year; Power Output up 11.7% on Year

BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Platts) -- China mined 3.52 billion mt of crude coal in 2011, up 8.7% year-on-year, according to a release by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Wednesday.

China's energy consumption totaled 3.48 billion mt of standard coal equivalent in 2011, up 7.0% year-on-year. Of that, coal consumption grew 9.7% year on year, NBS said in the release without give specific figures.

For comparison, China produced primary energy totaling 3.18 billion mt of standard coal equivalent in 2011, up 7.0% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, China generated 4.7 PWh of electricity in 2011, up 11.7% year on year. Of that, coal-fired power represented 3.83 PWh, up 14.8% year-on year; hydropower represented 694 TWh, down 3.9% year on year; and nuclear power represented 86.4 TWh, up 16.9% year-on-year.

In separate news, according to figures from local coal industry bureaus, China's Inner Mongolia mined 56.8 million mt of coal in January 2012, down 18.4% year on year; Shanxi Province mined 62.42 million mt of coal in January, up 7.4% year on year.
