LIMA, Mar 29, 2010 (Dow Jones Commodities News via Comtex) -- Peru's mine unions said Monday they will call an indefinite nationwide strike June 30.

Peru is the world's No. 1 silver producer, and it is second in copper and sixth in gold. It also produces large amounts of other minerals such as zinc, tin and molybdenum.

"The date is confirmed now," Luis Castillo, general secretary of Peru's National Federation of Mining, told Dow Jones Newswires.

Unions met last week to agree on the strike, to protest delays in ratifying laws that would improve mine workers' profit-sharing and pension benefits.

Miners in Peru have held several strikes over the past few years to demand increased benefits, but these have not seriously affected production at the biggest mines. In some cases companies have used replacement workers or mined higher-grade ore.
