【SMM Steel】India’s state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has officially launched green hydrogen steelmaking trials, while also implementing various low-carbon initiatives including carbon capture, utilization & storage (CCUS), biochar injection, and renewable energy use to demonstrate its commitment to green steel. According to standards issued by India’s Ministry of Steel in late 2024, steel qualifies as green if CO2 emissions are below 2.2 tons per ton, with a five-star rating granted to those below 1.6 tons. SAIL currently emits 2.5–3 tons per ton of crude steel and aims to significantly cut emissions by replacing conventional high-carbon fuels with hydrogen, aligning with global green steel benchmarks. This effort helps SAIL counter export pressures from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), while securing early access to low-carbon certification, green financing, and brand leadership. Although green hydrogen steelmaking still faces challenges from high costs and limited renewable energy availability, SAIL’s five integrated steel mills with over 21 million tons of annual capacity position it well to absorb initial investments and scale production.
