【SMM Steel】India’s steel industry is unlikely to be significantly affected by U.S. tariffs, but the European Union’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) is expected to impact its exports. Around two-thirds of India’s steel exports go to Europe, while shipments to the U.S. are minimal. India has sought an exemption from the CBAM, which will impose higher taxes on imports of high-carbon products including steel, aluminium, and cement. Most of India’s steel is produced using blast furnaces, which are highly carbon-intensive, and the continued expansion of blast furnace capacity remains a concern. Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik noted persistent concerns about cheap imports, adding that the government is expected to decide on safeguard duties soon. Last month, India proposed an 11%-12% three-year import duty on certain steel products to curb shipments from top producer China.
