Swedish mine operator LKAB began relocating the 113-year-old Kiruna Church on Tuesday to a site approximately 5 km from the new city center, making way for the subsequent expansion of the Kiruna underground iron ore mine.
LKAB provided approximately 500 million Swedish kronor ($52 million) in funding for the relocation.
LKAB produces 80% of Europe's iron ore, currently operating three projects: the Kiruna underground iron ore mine, the Svappavaara iron ore mine, and the Malmberget (also known as Gällivare) underground iron ore mine, with a combined annual production of 22.7 million mt. Through its hydrogen-based technology strategy for producing sponge iron, the company is leading the transformation of the steel industry.
LKAB plans to extend the underground iron ore mine to a depth of 1,365 meters, which is expected to increase annual production to 33 million mt/year.
