SMM electric arc furnace operating rate: profits of steel mills failed to improve

According to SMM research, as of May 14, the operating rates of 50 electric arc furnace-based steel mills across China who mainly produce rebar was 41.26%, up 2.92 percentage points WoW. The average capacity utilisation rate stood at 40.81%, up 1.51 percentage point WoW. Their daily average rebar output was 90,900 mt, up 3,400 mt WoW.

China imported 12,700 mt of refined zinc in March, up 170.37% on the month but down 40.09% on the year. The imports totalled 19,300 mt in the first three months of 2023, down 53.75% YoY, while total exports of refined zinc during the same period stood at 2,400 mt. This pointed to net imports of 16,900 mt.
