SHANGHAI, May 10 (SMM) – A roundup of headlines across the ferrous sector of the week.
1. Tangshan to import 12,000 mt of recycled steel in May
As of the end of April, Shougang Jingtang, China Minmetals and other companies have imported a total of 11,000 mt of recycled steel from Caofeidian Port. Delong Group, Jingye Group, and China State Shipbuilding Corporation imported 12,000 mt of recycled steel from Jingtang Port. Customs department estimated that Caofeidian Port and Jingtang Port will import 4 ships of recycled steel, with a total volume of 12,000 mt, in May, as tariffs on some steel products have been adjusted from on May 1. Many steel and steel-related enterprises in Tangshan have been focusing on ultra-low emissions and seeking low-carbon solutions this year and have imported recycled steel raw materials from South Korea and Japan due to the implementation of the "Recycled Steel Raw Materials" on January 1.
2. Ansteel’s Zhoukou steel project to be commissioned
Ansteel Group's Zhoukou steel project has produced oxygen recently, meaning the project is about to be commissioned soon. The project has a total steel capacity of 10 million mt per year and will be constructed in two phases. Phase Ihas an annual capacity of 2 million mt of pig iron and 2.2 million mt of molten steel costs 5.84 billion yuan. At present, 16 main projects, including raw material yard, sintering, blast furnace, steelmaking and continuous casting, steel rolling, oxygen production, power supply and distribution, are all proceeding smoothly as scheduled.
3. Revised Capacity Replacement Measures for Iron/Steel Industry
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued the revised edition of Capacity Replacement Measures for Iron and Steel Industry, which will be implemented on June 1. It is strictly forbidden to increase the total steel capacity in key areas for the prevention and control of air pollution. In order to encourage corporate mergers and reorganisations and increase industry concentration, when the legal capacity obtained after the completion of substantive mergers and reorganisations is used for project construction, the replacement/new capacity ratio is allowed to be no less than 1.25:1 in key areas for pollution prevention and control, and no less than 1.1:1 in other areas.
4. Baosteel to commission No. 3 BF in Zhangang next month
Baosteel plans to commission its No. 3 blast furnace in Zhangang in June, which adopts ultra-low emission process. Once the project is put into operation, the total capacity of the Zhanjiang base will expand to 12.25 million mt of molten iron, 10,000 mt of molten steel, and 10.81 million mt of steel annually.
5. Jianlong to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality
Jianlong Group has taken the measures below to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. For instance the company is using clean energy such as wind power and photovoltaic power generation to reduce carbon emissions. In addition, Jianlong also established a micro power grid to leverage on wind power and photovoltaic power generation The company’s goal is to make clean energy account for one-third of the electricity consumption in western China. In addition, Jianlong will vigorously promote the use of hydrogen vehicles. Its Saisipu project in Wuhai was the world's first industrialised hydrogen-rich metallurgical project which realise hydrogen-rich metallurgy and all-hydrogen metallurgy.
