China’s scrap metal imports expand to highest since Dec

China imported 350,000 mt of scrap metal in Apr

SHANGHAI, May 23 (SMM) – China imported 350,000 mt of scrap metal in April, the highest monthly import since December 2018, according to data from China Customs.

This was up 40% from March, but down 20.4% from April 2018.

China aims to cut solid waste imports to zero by 2020, and Category Six materials face import bans from July.

Customs data also showed that imports of copper scrap rose 70% month on month to stand at 170,000 mt last month, down 5.5% year on year.

Imports of aluminium scrap rose 15.4% from a month ago and 14.3% from a year ago to stand at 150,000 mt in April.
