Rio Tinto Releases Major Products Output in First Quarter, Lowers Target for 2017

Rio Tinto’s copper output at its copper mines slid 37% year-on-year to 84,200 tonnes in the first quarter of 2017 as a result of strike at Chile’s Escondida copper mine and output cut at Grasberg mine

SHANGHAI, Apr. 20 (SMM) - Rio Tinto’s copper output at its copper mines slid 37% year-on-year to 84,200 tonnes in the first quarter of 2017 as a result of strike at Chile’s Escondida copper mine and output cut at Grasberg mine in Indonesia, wenhua.com reported.

The company thus lowers its production target to 500,000-550,000 tonnes this year from 525,000-665,000 tonnes expected previously. Its copper cathode production is estimated to be 185,000-225,000 tonnes.

Its aluminum output grew 2% year-on-year to reach 889,000 tonnes in Q1, but down 3% on a quarterly basis.

Coking coal production fell 20% year-on-year to 1.58 million tonnes. 

Iron ore output was 81.558 million tonnes, a fall of 9.6% on a quarterly basis, and down 2.9% year-on-year. Shipments were 81.096 million tonnes, down 12.5% on a quarterly basis,but up 0.4% year-on-year.
