US Raw Steel production plummets 19% y/y to 1,456,000 net tons

United States domestic raw steel production plummeted nearly 19% year-on-year to 1,456,000 net tons in the week ended December 26.

NEW YORK (Scrap Register): United States domestic raw steel production plummeted nearly 19% year-on-year to 1,456,000 net tons in the week ended December 26, while the capability utilization rate was 60.9 percent, as per the latest figures from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

According to AISI, Production was 1,795,000 net tons in the week ended December 26, 2014 while the capability utilization then was 74.6 percent.

The current week production represents a 18.9 percent decrease from the same period in the previous year. Production for the week ended December 26, 2015 is down 4.4 percent from the previous week ended December 19, 2015 when production was 1,523,000 net tons and the rate of capability utilization was 63.7 percent.

Adjusted year-to-date production through December 26, 2015 was 86,843,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 71.0 percent.

That is down 9.3 percent from the 95,706,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 77.5 percent.

The domestic secondary crude lead market experienced sluggish transactions. As of February 6, 2026, the ex-factory tax-exclusive offers for domestic secondary crude lead stood at 15,250-15,400 yuan/mt. Downstream refined lead and alloy smelters gradually entered the holiday period, showing weak stockpiling willingness. Overseas lead ingot suppliers basically halted transactions with China due to poor consumption in the Chinese market, with only some previously concluded shipments maintaining normal in-transit transportation. The trading atmosphere in the secondary crude lead market will continue to weaken next week.
