SHANGHAI, Sept. 24 (SMM) – China’s copper output rose 47,000 tonnes to 681,000 tonnes in August, its highest this year, the National Bureau of Statistics reports, matching result of SMM’s survey which indicates an eight-month high operating rate at Chinese smelters.
The latest SMM survey of 23 Chinese smelters shows their combined output hit 488,000 tonnes in August, up 23,000 tonnes.
Spot TCs for copper concentrate climbed to $120 per tonne in August, boosting concentrate imports. The increased availability of concentrate then drove up the supply of blister copper, enabling smelters to ramp production back up, especially those that fell short of H1 production targets.
Total output in the first eight months increased 11.2% to 4.93 million tonnes.
