US Apr '14 steel shipments down 1.2% from Mar, up 3.2% over the year: AISI

The most recent report released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) indicates that the US steel mill shipments decreased by 1.2% in April 2014 over the previous month.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent report released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI)- the association of North American steel producers indicates that the US steel mill shipments decreased by 1.2% in April 2014 over the previous month. However, the shipments in April this year were up by 3.2% when compared with the figures recorded during same month the previous year.

According to AISI, the US steel mills shipment for the month of April totaled 8,235,096 net tons, 1.2% lower when compared to the total shipments of 8,337,578 net tons during March this year. Also, the steel shipments in April have increased significantly over the year. The April 2014 steel shipments were up 3.2% when compared with the 7,978,531 net tons shipment during April 2013.

The US steel shipments year-to-date was up 1.7% at 32.086 million net tons as against 31.548 million tons shipment during the corresponding four-month period in 2013.

The products which witnessed sizable increase in shipments during the month of April when compared to the previous month were: hot rolled sheet (up by 2%), hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip (unchanged), and cold rolled sheet (down by 0.1%).
