China imported 1.83 million tonnes of bauxite in March, down by 59.17% year-on-year due to falling arrivals and soft consumption, China Customs data showed.

SHANGHAI, Apr. 22 (SMM) – China imported 1.83 million tonnes of bauxite in March, down by 59.17% year-on-year due to falling arrivals and soft consumption, according to Shanghai Metals Market.

The sharp drop in imports was due mainly to no shipments to China from Indonesia after its ban on ore exports, according to SMM's research team. The preference to use inventories for production and production cuts at Chinese alumina producers with imported ore as raw material, were also blamed for the tumble in imports.

Bauxite imports from major suppliers are detailed as follows.
