BEIJING, Aug. 3 -- Home appliance sales in rural parts of China rose 25.3 percent year-on-year to reach 19.97 billion yuan (3.1 billion U.S. dollars) in July, the Ministry of Commerce said Wednesday.

The total number of appliances sold increased 11.8 percent from a year earlier to hit 7.51 million units, the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

Chinese farmers received subsidies for the purchase of home appliances after the government introduced a subsidy program in February 2009 to spur rural consumption.

As of July 31, sales of home appliances added up to 173 million units, valued at 386.3 billion yuan, with accumulated subsidies from the government valued at 44.4 billion yuan, the statement said.
