Feb. 22 --  Brazilian miner Vale (VALE5.SA) said Friday it shut down its No. 2 furnace at the Copper Cliff nickel smelter in Ontario, Canada due to problems, which will keep it down for 16 weeks at least.

"The stoppage of the furnace implies a loss of an estimated 15,000 tonnes of refined nickel, equivalent to 5 percent of total planned production in 2011," Vale said in a statement.
