NEW YORK, Aug. 26 -- Rio Tinto Group said it declared force majeure on production from the casthouse at its aluminum smelter in Straumsvik, Iceland, following a fire.
The company can't quantify the effects of the force majeure, Rio spokesman Bryan Tucker said today in an e-mail.
The fire last week in the basement of the casthouse damaged electrical cables.
Force majeure is a legal clause allowing producers to miss contracted deliveries because of circumstances beyond their control.
