Goldman Sachs Highlights Tariff Impacts: Some US Industries May Benefit, But More Will Suffer

March 6 (CLSA) – Goldman Sachs' latest report indicates that US President Trump's recently implemented and proposed tariffs are disrupting US trade relations. The tariff hikes are expected to impact major US industries: some may benefit, but more are likely to suffer.

Maintenance activities gradually increased, pig iron production continued to decline slightly.
According to the SMM survey, as of June 11, the operating rate of blast furnaces at 242 steel mills surveyed by SMM was 88.15%, down 0.11 percentage point WoW. The capacity utilisation rate of blast furnaces was 89.51%, down 0.05 percentage point WoW. The daily average pig iron production of the sampled steel mills was 2.4149 million mt, down 1,400 mt WoW.

SMM Survey: Blast Furnaces Gradually Resume Production, Pig Iron Production Continues to Rise
According to the SMM survey, as of January 22, the operating rate of blast furnaces at 242 steel mills surveyed by SMM was 85.60%, up 0.46 percentage points WoW. The blast furnace capacity utilisation rate was 87.85%, up 0.87 percentage points WoW. The daily average pig iron production of the sampled steel mills was 2.3641 million mt, up 15,300 mt WoW.

China's Iron Ore Imports Increased In May But To Fall In June
Iron ore and concentrate imports totalled 96.18 million mt in May 2023, a month-on-month growth of 5.73 million mt or 6.3%. YTD imports through May stood at 4.81 trillion mt, a year-on-year growth of 7.7%. The increase in iron ore imports in May was mainly due to the weakening of seasonal disruptions and the gradual recovery of overseas shipments.
