The Peruvian Mining Chamber expects copper production to increase by 2-4% this year.

On Wednesday, April 9, Julia Torreblanca, head of the National Society of Mining, Petroleum, and Energy of Peru (SNMPE), stated that Peru's copper production is expected to grow by 2-4% this year.

This will increase Peru's copper production to 2.79-2.85 million mt, up from 2.74 million mt last year.

Torreblanca mentioned during a conference break that the Peruvian government is working to streamline permitting procedures to enable miners to ramp up production more quickly.

Peru is the world's third-largest copper producer, having been surpassed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2023.

Torreblanca also noted that the country is seeking to mitigate the impact of tariffs imposed by the US, and if the US government imposes tariffs on copper, Peru may explore other markets outside the US.

"If our products or selling prices are affected, we will have to evaluate whether we can sell our products in other economies without harming our own interests," Torreblanca added.

Her remarks align with those of Chilean Mining Minister Aurora Williams, who earlier stated that countries with lower tariff ranges would be more attractive than those with higher ones if the US imposes tariffs on copper.
