In early March, the Canadian government announced during the 2023 Canadian International Mining Conference that it will invest nearly CAD 360 million (about $260 million) to promote research, development and expansion in key mineral fields.
Canada's Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Jonathan Wilkinson, said during the meeting that the country is working to simplify the licensing process for mining companies.
In addition, in late March, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and US President Biden issued a joint statement announcing that the two countries will jointly build a key mineral supply chain.
The two events reflect that Canada has made both internal and external efforts in recent years to promote the development of its own mineral industry and improve its position in the global key mineral supply chain.
In March 2021, O'Regan, the former Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, released a list of the country's 31 key minerals at the 2021 annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Exploration and Development, including copper, aluminum, zinc, tin, rare earths, fluorspar, nickel, scandium, Cobalt, graphite, antimony, helium, bismuth, indium, tantalum, cesium, lithium, tellurium, chromium, magnesium, manganese, titanium, molybdenum, tungsten, uranium, gallium, niobium, vanadium, germanium, platinum and potassium.
In the future, Canada will focus on all aspects of the value chain of 31 key minerals, including lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, copper, rare earth, potash, uranium and aluminum, etc., and will provide support from exploration and development to recycling.
