As of last Friday, Yangshan copper premiums with a quotation period in June stood at $25-45/mt under warrants, with the average up $10.5/mt from a week earlier, verss $40-60/mt under bill of lading with a quotation period in June, with the average up $/5mt. As of CST 15 on May 19, the SHFE/LME copper price ratio stood at 7.97, and import profit stood at 581/mt. During the week, the supply of goods in domestic trade market gradually tightened, and the spot premiums once jumped to around 400 yuan/mt. This, combined with the continuous depreciation of the yuan, led to a high theoretical profit of copper import.
Yangshan copper premiums rose at the end of the week. However, buyers and sellers had different expectations for the market outlook. Sellers raised premiums due to optimism over domestic spot premiums and the SHFE/LME copper price ratio. But downstream processing plants purchased cautiously as they did not have high expectations for the continued recovery of the SHFE/LME copper price ratio. During the week, the actual transaction price of warrants fell sharply compared with the offer price, which shows that there were still differences in opinions between buyers and sellers.
In terms of bills of lading, offers for goods to be delivered in late June were limited due to tight supply, and rose sharply. SMM understood that concentrated arrivals in late May will impact premiums. Traded prices of mainstream pyro-copper that will arrive in early June rose slightly. This week, delivered warrants and bonded goods will flow into the domestic market, which may put pressure on domestic premiums. Yangshan copper premiums will fall.
